BLOOMING MARVELLOUS: NEWQUAY ZOO STRIKES GOLD ON DEBUT

Newquay Zoo team with award

Newquay Zoo has been awarded a Gold medal in this year’s Britain in Bloom competition, a standout achievement for its first-ever entry into the prestigious national horticultural event. The award recognises the zoo’s vibrant planting schemes, which enhance the visitor experience while supporting the welfare of its animals.

Judges praised the Cornwall-based attraction for its beautifully designed landscapes, enhancing the natural feel of animal enclosures and maintaining seasonal interest throughout the year. The result reflects the skill and dedication of the zoo’s team, who continue to deliver high-quality experiences for visitors while managing the site with care and efficiency.

Damian King, head gardener at Newquay Zoo, commented: "To receive Gold in our very first attempt is beyond what we could have hoped for. We've worked incredibly hard this year to create spaces that not only look beautiful for our visitors but also provide enriching, natural environments for the animals in our care."

Britain in Bloom celebrates excellence in horticulture, environmental responsibility, and community engagement. Newquay Zoo’s success demonstrates its ability to balance beauty with practicality, showcasing the strength of its operations and the expertise of its staff.

This recognition comes at a time of renewed focus on the future of the zoo. Wild Planet Trust, the charity behind Newquay Zoo and Paignton Zoo, recently announced it is seeking investment to secure the long-term sustainability of both sites. With interest already emerging from across the UK and Europe, the Gold award reinforces Newquay Zoo’s position as a well-loved, community-focused destination with exciting potential for future development.

The Gold award also marks a double success for Wild Planet Trust, with Paignton Zoo receiving the same honour. Catherine Mortimer, Curator of Gardens at Paignton Zoo, stepped up to join the judging team for the South West in Bloom Awards, further highlighting the depth of horticultural talent within the organisation.

Newquay Zoo remains fully open and continues to welcome visitors daily. With Halloween and Christmas on the horizon, the zoo is inviting visitors to experience its award-winning gardens and support its future through visits, memberships, and animal adoptions.
