Newquay's Trenance Trail unveiled for May half term

Newquay's Trenance Trail in Cornwall

There is a new free activity for families in Newquay this half term. If you venture beyond Newquay's bustling high street and beautiful beaches, there is a beautiful peaceful valley called Trenance. With its striking viaduct, managed gardens and trickling stream, the Trenance Valley is a gem in Newquay's crown.

Newquay Business Improvement District (BID) was granted funding from Cornwall Council's Town Delivery Fund and Experience Newquay to create a trail joining Cliff Road to the Trenance Valley. Award-winning children's book illustrator, author, artist and muralist Maia Walczak who is based in Newquay was approached by Newquay BID to pen the story and illustrations. Meandering through forests, oceans, outer space and inner space, her work celebrates the natural world.

The idea behind the trail was to connect Cliff Road with the Trenance Valley and spotlight the businesses and attractions in this area of Newquay, all whilst providing a free and fun reading activity for families. From mini-golf to a mini ride-on train, a tennis centre to trampoline park, you'll never be short of some fun in Trenance.

The Trail is made up of seven circular pavement stickers with a blue border around the Trenance Valley. Each sticker depicts a scene of our story and is accompanied by a QR code. To read the chapter linked to each illustration, scan the QR code, and you will be taken to the story with directions to the next chapter.

Author and illustrator, Maia Walczak said: "It was such an honour to be asked to work on this beautiful community story and art installation! I loved the challenge of coming up with a story from scratch that would encompass all the different elements the story trail needed to include. Thank you Newquay BID and Cornwall Council for trusting me with this challenge! I hope the tale of this little Piskie and his Earth dwelling friends enchants children (and adults!) and has them appreciating and connecting to the wonders of their surroundings, both the local Trenance surroundings, and the wider surroundings of this planet we call home."

Abigail Hubbucks, staff at Newquay BID said: "Trenance is such a beautiful area of Newquay, with its remarkable offerings for those young and old, such as the trampoline park and serene rose garden, as well as businesses which are valuable for our community such as Micro DIY and Ideal Bikes and Boards. Working with Maia to deliver this trail as a free activity for children and families to use to explore this area and connect with reading has been a joy. The Experience Newquay event last November, Trees and Tales, set the scene wonderfully to have a magickal creature within this setting."
